Vlogging is a great outlet to express your opinions, entertain people, or just keep your friends up-to-date with what’s going on in your life in a medium much more entertaining than writing a Facebook status or paragraphs of a traditional blog post. If you’re reading this, chances are that you’re more interested in the the former two, though – expressing opinions and entertaining people. That’s what I do.

In my most popular YouTube video, now having received over 11,000 views and well over 100 video responses (15 of which are still active), ‘How to Make a GOOD Vlog,’ I talk about some of the basics on how to make sure that you’re vlog doesn’t, to put it frankly, suck, I didn’t call it ‘How to Succeed on YouTube’ or something like that, because these tips are the very minimum of quality you need to get started.

Today, I want to talk about a question that I get a LOT from fans and fellow YouTubers that I only briefly touched upon in my video: Where do I start?

A lot of people have the passion, ability, patience, equipment, and drive to video blog, and that’s great! But one thing that ends up stifling a lot of people’s creativity is they have no idea where to begin or what to talk about.

That’s what we’ll be talking about today.

Where Do I Start?
First, you need an idea. Something to talk about. Something that is not only interesting to you, but potential viewers on Youtube. If it’s a popular subject, make sure to present a reason why your video is different than all the other vloggers talking about the same thing. No one wants to hear your opinion if it’s the same as everyone else’s or if it’s old news, or if it’s obviously just, pardon the term, an attempt at ‘whoring’ yourself out to get more viewers. Traditionally, there seems to be three types of Vlogs.

- Diaries
- Opinions
-Reviews

Diaries
Diaries are the vlogs that talk about you, you, and more you. What you’re doing in school. How work is going. That oh-so-interesting trip to the grocery store you took last week. Stuff like that. The one problem with these kinds of videos, though, is that unless the viewer is just really interested in what you’re saying (it helps to be attractive. Guys, smile and squint a lot. Girls, bite your lip and giggle. Bam 100k views over night.), people aren’t going to care – at least not until you build a fan base. If you’re new at this, unless something just incredible happened at the hair salon or you just saw the freakiest-looking spider or something not totally bland, no one is going to care.

Opinions
Everyone likes to have their opinion known. Vlogs are an excellent opportunity to get your voice out there. Politics, Social issues, gripes, praises, sermons, lectures – things like these have the ability to stir up either controversy and hatred, or support and love. You’ve got to have some thick skin if you’re going to pursue an opinion-based vlog. People are going to hate you because you might think differently. (One time, I brought up how disrespectful Senator Barbara Boxer was to an Army General one time, and I was called a ‘fatass faggot.’ Not only does it make them sound like a middle schooler, but neither insults have anything to do with the topic. )

But along with the hate, you’ll find love, too. When people find someone else that shares an opinion with them, it makes them feel special, smart. Valued, even. People say to avoid Religion and Politics in polite conversation, and if you want polite conversation on YouTube, you probably should avoid opinion-based vlogs. If you want Subscriptions and Views, though, you’re gonna have to step up to the podium.

Reviews
One thing I really enjoy about the Youtube community is how we look after one another with reviews on products, services, movies, games, music, etc. There is no incentive for a YouTuber, even a partner, to give a biased review on something. We can all be honest with what we like and don’t like. If you play a lot of video games, make a review on the last game you played! Even if it’s an old game, like from the SNES or N64 era, label it ‘Retro.’ People eat that up. If you saw a really good (or really sucky) movie recently, film a video review and put it online! Read any good books lately? Muse and ponder the finer points of a literary endeavor by speaking into the camera for two minutes.

There are many different ways to vlog. Unless you want to be known as a specialist, be open to all three of these vlog types. If you are passionate when speaking, and have a personality people can enjoy. and topics worth speaking about, you will be on your way to succeeding on YouTube.

These ideas are just a springboard to get you thinking – there are no rules when it comes to what kind of video you want to make. (Okay, don’t put up porn. That’s kind of frowned upon.). The first and most important step, though, if to GET GOING! You’ll never be able to make a good video without practice, and you won’t get practice if you’re afraid to make a video.

Hope you enjoyed this helpful little article. If you enjoyed it, please consider donating to Major Motion Studios by clicking the link to the right or the ‘Save the Website!’ link up top. If you can’t donate, click an ad! It’s a hassle-free of showing the indie community of Youtubers and video makers you care.

Hope this helps, and happy YouTubing!

YouTube. It’s the #1 video website on the internet, with 4.67 billion more views than their closest competing video website. In one day alone, YouTube receives double the number of views all three major primetime television networks receive, combined, at 2 billion. More content is created for YouTube in 60 days than these same primetime networks create in 60 years. 48 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every single minute, adding up to, literally, decades of content.1 Suck on that, television.

So, video makers, marketers, and advertisers have a great place to promote their product, and the best part of all – it’s free. Unlike television and print ads, people are encouraged to share videos with one another, make comments, ‘like’ videos, and with social networking like Facebook and Twitter, show others what they are watching, without any cost to the creator. That’s why companies need to be on, at the very least, the internet nowadays.

But just who is on YouTube?

Here’s some interesting statistics and facts you might not have known, or maybe you never even thought about.2

Politically speaking, there are 0.2 million more Republicans on YouTube than Democrats, but, overall, there roughly 2.3 million more Independent voters than the Republican and Democrat parties.

The average median income of American YouTube users is $74,000 a year.

Just under 70% of YouTube users are college educated.

The age of the average YouTube user? 33 years old.

70% of YouTube traffic, however, comes from outside the United States – YouTube has been localized in 23 different countries, and in 24 different languages.

More than half of American YouTube users are from Suburban areas, as apposed to Urban or Rural places.

The YouTube audience is 53% Male and 47% Female.

47% of YouTube users are married.

These are all very interesting, but, for us marketers and capitalists, what does that mean for our profits? Glad you asked.

YouTube monetizes 1 Billion videos a week.

The number of advertisers using display ads on YouTube has increased 10x since January 2011.

94 of 100 of Advertising Age‘s top 100 advertisers have run YouTube ad campaigns.

Partner ad revenus more than tripled in 2009 and increased 5x since 2011.

Another thing that advertisers, marketers, and filmmakers would be crazy not to take advantage of is YouTube’s new monetization feature, essentially allowing ANY good-standing YouTube user to become a Partner, instantly, without having to wait weeks (or sometimes months) for the application process that they used to force people to go through.

In the digital age, it’s entirely necessary to have an online presence. Video is more memorable and generally more enjoyable that other kinds of advertising. Online video is arguably the best way to Promote your product, attract new customers, and, most importantly, make money.

Which reminds me. Click an ad at the top of the page. :)

Very rarely does a 3D family film come out that… well, let’s face it, isn’t utter crap. Usually, it’s one or the other; you can see a 3D movie with an amazing story, but annoying 3D (Deathly Hallows is a good example), or a crap story with spectacular 3D (Avatar… hurr). ”Hugo” happens to be a shining example of a movie that has a wonderful story and smile-inducing 3D.

STORY = 5/5

I went in seeing Hugo having only slightly an idea in regards to what the story actually was about. To my surprise, it was an absolute marvel of a tale that really hit home with me. The gist of the film is this; how magic can exist on screen; in movies and film. That’s not me talking about Hugo, that was actually the plot of the film. It is an amazing tale of a retired film director from the pioneer days of the industry and how he lost his passion. Luckily, through a series of seemingly un-related events, our film’s orphaned hero, Hugo, meets this man and, without spoiling anything, discovers what his former life was all about. It’s a story of the innocence of childhood (along with adorable puppy love), never giving up on your dreams, and love in a form we just too often don’t see on film anymore. Spectacular story.

TECHNICAL PROWESS = 5/5

Sheer beauty. The cinematography, the special effects, the 3D, the animation, the period pieces… all were near perfection. I didn’t want to film to end, I was so enthralled with the experience Scorsese brought to the screen with ‘Hugo.’ The 3D, like I mentioned, was actually very well done, and spectacular fun to view, without it distracting you from the excellent story, which seems to be the downfall of films made in 3D. Some of the 1930′s film recreations were absolutely marvelous.

ACTING= 5/5

Every character was played especially well, but most importantly, the two child leads were impeccable in their portrayal of Hugo and Isabelle. Asa Butterfield (You might have seen him in ‘The Boy in the Striped Pajamas’) and Chloë Grace Moretz (Vampire story ‘Let Me In’ and Action-comedy ‘Kick-Ass’), were two of the most brilliant young actors I’ve ever seen on screen. The chemistry they had, even as two children, were outstanding. Ben Kingsley (whom I’ve always enjoyed) did a spectacular job in his role as well, and, surprisingly, Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat, Bruno) can play a character that is lovable and not profane! Imagine that!

SOUNDTRACK/MUSIC = 5/5

The film was filled with silent-movie-style piano music, French violin melodies, and charming, magical pieces that really ties together the feel of being in post-WWII France. Beautiful and memorable, Hugo’s score will be known as the icing on this already-delicious cake.

OVERALL = 5/5

One of the best films I saw this year, standing next to ‘Super 8′ and ‘Drive.’ I cannot recommend this film highly enough. Absolutely marvelous from beginning to end. If you’re not a fan of 3D, though, see it in Martin Scorsese’s best ever. I really mean that. Something that must be experienced on the big screen.

CONTENT WARING
Actual Rating: PG
Worthy Rating: G

No sex. No language (seriously – I don’t think I heard a single ‘what the hell’ in there). No violence. The only scary image I can think of is during a dream sequence, Hugo has a scary dream, but really, that’s it. I think there was some smoking at one point, and Ben Kingsley’s character is kind of a mean old man at some parts, but really, any one should be able to handle it. Great family movie that isn’t a kids’ movie, if you know what I mean. Too often, the motion picture industry will market a children’s movie as a ‘family movie,’ when it’s not. Hugo, though, is a family movie. Go see it!

Just about a year ago, I was driving to work, and I looked out my window towards the gas station/car wash that I drive past all the time. And there was a movie crew, and written on the signs surrounding the store was ‘FOOTLOOSE.’ They were filming a Hollywood movie, HERE? In Small Town, Georgia? It was beyond cool to see. Then, they filmed in a small shopping district near here; Old Town Hiram. It was a surreal feeling to see our train tracks and stores and buildings on the big screen.

I only wish we would have been featured in a better movie.

STORY = 2/5

“Hey! Let’s be teenagers and rebel!” That was the tagline for this movie, wasn’t it? No? Might as well have been. The story is a 2011 update of the Kevin Bacon classic, which, truth be told, was equally shallow. The plot was actually ‘There is a law against dancing, and we don’t like it! LET’S DANCE!’ Call me conservative, but I live in a town very similar to the one featured in this movie; not that many people into dancing. The film treated teenagers as stereotypically as they could; all ‘we’ want to do is just mouth off, have tons of sex, and just DANCE.’ I’ve never met anyone like that, but whatever.

The characters were very bland. Cookie-cutter, even. The lead character was ‘Boston Boy Moves To Small Town.’ It was like watching a corpse parade around on strings – I didn’t realize they were trying to reanimate a story so old, it was dead. Then, you have your typical teen romance (gag me) where the girl’s father is too protective and blah blah blah. It was all very dull and actually pretty annoying to see all these teenagers walk around with such a undeserved sense of arrogance, and very disappointing, knowing that some more easily-influenced teens will be influenced to act like that.

The only redeeming quality of the story is Dennis Quaid’s character’s journey, although the film antagonized the crap out of his character. His was a journey of letting go, and honestly, was a MUCH more heart-felt and interesting story than the ‘OH MAN STOP HOLDING OUR DANCING FEET DOWN.’

TECHNICAL PROWESS =4/5

These kids can dance.

As annoying as the concept was, the truth is, the filmmakers did a great job showing all the dancing on screen, and the dancers themselves were really quite good. The cinematography was a cut above the other youth-focused films of late, and I loved the opening title sequence, set to, of course, ‘Footloose.’ The editing was slick, and it never confused you. The only gripe I could have is that sometimes, for some reason, the camera was pushed up against the actors WAY too close. Little nitpick, but it was noticeably distracting.

ACTING= 2/5

Let’s face it – ‘Footloose’ won’t be linked to Academy-grade acting. But, for what it is, the actors did an okay job – Dennis Quaid was particularly good in his role. The worst was, by far, the female lead of Ariel (It’s Air-e-ul, not Ah-ree-el her character demands). I’m not sure if it was her character or the fact that most of the lines she delivered just felt painfully bad, but she bugged me, and others who were watching the movie. The lead (Kenny Wormand) simply could NOT carry the weight of the film all on his own. He is a weak actor, and I really felt nothing for him. Maybe they shouldn’t have replaced Zach Efron? I’m not a huge fan of his, but admittedly, his performance in ‘Hairspray’ was very enjoyable, and they could have used it in ‘Footloose.’ The ONLY person I really enjoyed was Miles Willard as the comic relief character, Willard. His delivery was excellent. He was the most interesting to follow, to love, to laugh with, and he really shined in his role. Kudos for that.

SOUNDTRACK/MUSIC = 3/5

Though it’s not nearly as catchy as the originals they were covering, the soundtrack does it’s job in being effective and having a wide variety. I HATE country music. Like, really. With a passion. No lie; it’s what Hell plays constantly, I’m pretty sure. But the filmmakers managed to include two country songs that even I enjoyed. I know, right? Shocking. Plus, the variety was excellent, be you into rap, country, pop, rock, R&B, etc. Everything is basically covered. I actually really enjoyed the cover of ‘Footloose’ that played during the finale. These songs will be stuck in your head for days, which is exactly what the filmmakers were going for.

OVERALL = 2.5/5

If you take your nostalgic glasses off, and look at the 1980′s Footloose for what it is, you’ll see the original really was kind of silly and average to begin, and the only reason people remember it was the soundtrack. Unfortunately, this one won’t even be remembered for that. It’s superficial take on some actually rather concerning and weighty issues was just very poor. Don’t get me wrong – this is a very fun movie, but it’s not a very good one. The one good message a person might be able to take from this film is that ‘Legalism means nothing. It’s all about the heart,’ but you’d have to dig through layers of dirt to find it.

CONTENT WARING
Actual Rating: PG-13
Worthy Rating: PG-13

Quite a bit of swearing, but nothing too bad for a PG-13. High schoolers should be able to handle it, and; let’s face it, middle schoolers hear worse everyday. The sexuality was pretty intense for a PG-13. If the girls weren’t thrusting or grinding or rubbing against another boy, they were making out, taking their tops off, or just being overtly sexual in general. There was one just plain stupid scene were the lead girl got the lead boy to fall for her by… playing suicide chicken with an on coming train. Um… what? Also, there was drinking, drugs, and fighting – a lot of pointless fighting. But, all of these things don’t really deserve an R rating, but it’s a lot stronger than the PG-13 films I grew up with.

Despite the fact that they typically feature some pretty bad acting and are universally panned by critics and movie-goers alike, I love ‘Found Footage’ movies. Something about them makes me just really get into them, even if the idea seems far-fetched. When I was 13, I made a scary movie called ‘In Search of the Bog Monster’ that featured this style. I showed my sister, and she said ‘Have you ever seen Blair Witch? Your movie is a lot like that – you’d like it.’ So, I went to my local Blockbuster (RIP) and rented it (well, my dad did – I was too young). I went home, and watched it in my room alone, and was so fascinated and scared by it.

I love the genre, and I generally enjoyed the first two installments of ‘Paranormal Activity,’ despite a few shortcomings. This was the first time I ever saw one in the theater, so it was a new experience. It would have been better had it not been for some loud-mouthed idiot teenagers (says the 19-year-old), but let’s get on with the review anyway.

STORY = 3/5

I have mixed feelings about the story. As a single installment, the story in PA3 is rather mediocre, but set among the other two, it’s really quite neat. The series essentially works backwards, 1 being the most recent, 2 before that, and 3 being set back in the 1980′s. With each installment, we learn a bit more about what is haunting this group of people. I can’t really go further into it without spoiling more, but as a whole, it’s cool. Alone? Not so much.

Also, much like 1 and 2, I was rather disappointed with the ending. That seems to be the flaw with PA. The middle is solid, the endings are not.

TECHNICAL PROWESS =4/5

This movie is dang creepy. Some parts had me squirming because it’s all in your head; very rarely do you see something scary. Nothing they could put on screen is as scary as what you can imagine. The special effects were well done, indeed, and this installment felt a lot more ‘real’ than the previous two. Plus, the filmmakers did a fantastic job of re-creating the 1980′s for this film. I imagine it would be hard to pull off in this genre, but they did so surprisingly well. Not to mention that when crap flies around, it makes you want to shout ‘AW HELL NO’ and close your eyes… which, honestly, might be what I’d do in an actual case of a haunting. Just saying.

ACTING= 3/5

The acting in this movie was okay, but I’d really like to spend some time on the young girl who played one of the children, Jessica Tyler Brown, was fantastic. Rarely do you see convincing performances from children in horror films, but I totally believed, out of all of them, that she was real. They way she spoke and reacted to things was brilliantly realistic. I have a 6-year-old niece myself, and Jessica shows that she understands how to convey realism in a fictional setting. Well, okay, she’s only, like, 5, but still.

The rest of the actors were pretty average. Nothing special. I did like the character of Randy, though. He seemed like a cool dude.

SOUNDTRACK/MUSIC = N/A

Because this is a ‘found-footage’ film, it really is impossible for it to have a background score, isn’t it? I mean, if every time we saw something scary, some James Newton-Howard type music started playing, it would take away any realism it might have. So there is no music at all in this movie, except for some creepy ambiance during the ending credits.

OVERALL = 3/5

Paranormal Activity 3 is a good scare, if you’re into that sort of thing. Perfect for the Halloween season. It makes me want to grab my camera, and go out to make my own ‘found-footage mockumentary.’ I don’t know if the filmmakers can push (see ‘milk’) this series any further, but if not, that’s just fine. It was fun while it lasted. See it with some friends for Halloween.

CONTENT WARING
Actual Rating: R
Worthy Rating: PG-13

I really don’t understand why this was given an ‘R’ rating. The MPAA officially says it’s because of ’violence, language, brief sexuality and drug use’ There was little violence at all; I’ve seen more in a PG film. There was a PG-13 amount of language, and the sexuality they are talking about is VERY brief. Also, the ‘drug use’ was even briefer. Had she not said she was smoking marijuana, I would have thought it was a regular cigarette. It really was quite mild to be rated R. I wouldn’t bring, say, a 12-year-old to see it, but a 14, 15-year-old? Shoot, they’d probably love it.

I love films that make you think and re-evaluate life as much as the next film school wannabe, but sometimes it’s just good to spend $5 on a cheap movie ticket, grab some popcorn and a Diet Coke, and relax with something created just to make you smile. ’The Big Year’ is certainly that movie, and surprisingly, was pretty good.

STORY = 3/5

Like I mentioned, this is not an elaborate tale with dozens of characters, separate realities, conspiracies, etc. This is a good, down-to-earth comedy. It revolves around three men, played by Steve Martin, Jack Black, and Owen Wilson, that all share the same obbsession: Bird-watching. Or, my bad, ‘Birding,’ as they call it in the film. They are each trying to complete a ‘Big Year,’ which is to observe as many different birds species as they can in 365 days. The three characters each have different personalities, and all are done quite well. Like I said, this story is not deep, but wildly entertaining.

TECHNICAL PROWESS = 3/5

It’s a popcorn movie; it doesn’t need to be made super dynamically to be effective. What it does, it does well, and that’s all there is to it, really. The one little gripe I might have is the special CGI effects for some birds. They looked pretty Discovery Channel-ishly fake, but I’m not complaining. Or I guess I am. Whatever.

ACTING= 4/5

All the Big Time actors like Martin, Black, and Wilson pull off their roles very well. Martin is the retired rich executive type with a big heart for his family. Black is a slacker in practice, bu a dreamer at heart willing to follow his dreams, and Wilson is the obsessed character that will stop at nothing to win… including sacrificing the people he loves to do so. I loved the characters, and their respective actors pulled them off quite well.

SOUNDTRACK/MUSIC = 4/5

Pretty good soundtrack. The score was standard fare, but some of the popular music tracks were enjoyable. Coldplay’s ‘Viva la Vida’ made an appearance, as well as some other fitting and quite funny songs. Also, what I loved (that not many noticed) is a lovely piano rendition of The Beatles ‘Blackbird’ that played during a more quite moment. Also, the song that played over the end credits was really enjoyable, though I have no idea what it was or who played it. I need to look that up…

OVERALL = 3.5/5

A very enjoyable adult comedy that you can actually take your kids to. Really, we don’t see enough PG rated comedies geared towards adults. Why do movies need gratuitous amounts of sex or violence to be ‘adult?’ This wasn’t a kids movie, but it was clean, which I appreciated. It was a lot of fun, had some good laughs, and actually had a FANTASTIC message. It remind me of the passage from the book of Matthew, “What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?” Owen Wilson’s character learns that the hard way.

CONTENT WARING
Actual Rating: PG
Worthy Rating: PG-13

Though it’s not overly-dripping with sex or violence, there are some elements that probably don’t belong in a PG movie. They say ‘Godd— it’ once and ‘S–t’ a couple of times. And there was a menagerie of other minor swears, and in one scene, Owen Wilson’s character’s wife mounts his lap in a bit of foreplay, but nothing too bad at all. Really, just over the threshold of the PG/PG-13 line, but I wouldn’t have rated it PG-13. Well-socialized and well-brought-up children should be fine with it’s content, though.

I like video games as much as the next guy. Heck, I probably like them more than the average person. I love exploring colorful worlds, fighting dangerous enemies, shooting terrorists, etc. Sometimes, when I play, multiplayer, I get competitive. If you have ever played ‘Mario Kart’ with me in the same room, you know what I mean. I’m a guy; we’re competitive.

But not this competitive.

Mark Bradford, an unemployed father of three from the United Kingdom ‘lost it,’ he says, after playing ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ with a 13-year-old boy. Apparently, the 13-year-old was trash talking something fierce, which is to be expected; he’s a 13-year-old boy playing a video game. Bradford, 46, just couldn’t handle the 8th graders comments anymore (which might have included such ENRAGING terms as ‘butthead,’ etc).

He got the kid’s address, hunted him down, broke in, and choked the child. Yes, I’m serious. He went on a manhunt for this 13-year-old kid and assaulted him by wrapping his hands around his probably scrawny, Adam’s Apple-less neck.

The assault came to an end when the boy’s mother pulled the attacker off of him. “It’s pathetic that a grown man would attack a defenseless child like this. If you can’t handle losing to a child then you shouldn’t be playing games.”

It’s true; if you can’t handle some trash talk from a child, you need to, well… get a job. As I stated, he is unemployed and playing video games online.

What do YOU think? Would you ever let something like a video game drive you to such frustration that you would choke a 13-year-old? Let me know in the comments!

When someone tells you that a movie has bank heists, A guy that drives a getaway car, guns, blunt objects to the head, blood, nudity, and the Mob, what do you think? Popcorn flick? ’Saturday night with the guys’ kinda movie? What would think if I said that this had a good chance of being an Oscar contender this year? Would you be surprised?

I believe ‘Drive,’ starring Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan (‘Never Let Me Go,’ and the upcoming ‘The Great Gatsby‘), is exactly that.

STORY = 4/5

The story in ‘Drive’ is surprisingly simple, even if the film is not. Without spoiling anything, Ryan Gosling’s character (dubbed ‘Driver’) is a stuntman for movies by day, wheelman by night (meaning, basically, he’s a gun-for-hire, only he drives the getaway car.) When he gets involved in a setup that takes the live of someone he knows well (Again, no spoilers), he finds himself involved.

The story is thrilling and entertaining, even if it’s not revolutionary. But really, sometimes innovation =/= Good. ’Drive,’ though not entirely innovative with it’s story, DOES =Good, if not ‘great’ or ‘fantastic.’

TECHNICAL PROWESS = 5/5

This is a brilliantly made film. No question. The direction is outstanding. Director Nicolas Winding Refn, who has a surprisingly lackluster resume, has, I believe, established himself as a force to be reckoned with if he’s even mentioned at the Academy Awards this year. The writing, too, was not complicated, but had fantastic character. The cinematography was… GORGEOUS. Basically every single shot was framed in an almost unhumanly beautiful way. Special effects, though not often seen, are just right, and surprisingly brutal. Excellent filmmaking, without a doubt.

ACTING= 4/5

Ryan Gosling really ties both spectrums of the film together as the ‘strong, silent’ type. Irene (played by Mulligan) was also charming and beautiful, though not in a Hollywood way. For something that will be generally remembered as an Action movie, she was not ever ‘sexy’ or ‘hot;’ she possessed a beauty that is realistic; sweet. Nurturing. Kind. Even the child actor in this film was a cut above other kid actors I’ve seen in some high-budget films as of late. The only problems I have are some of the Mob characters are far too stereotypical for my taste. The head hancho guys might as well been saying ‘Badda-bing, badda-boom; say hello to my little friend, a’ight?’ but it’s really nothing to complain about.

SOUNDTRACK/MUSIC = 4/5

Though there is not really a rememberable score for ‘Drive,’ but where that is a loss, the selective soundtrack is perfect for this film. The selection for songs is almost post-film in nature. Reminded me a lot of Stanley Kubrick’s ‘A Clockwork Orange’ in the way the music was presented and played. College’s ‘A Real Hero’ has been stuck in my head since I left the theater, and will no doubt become the ‘theme’ for this film. Though, unquestionably, the most haunting and beautiful use of music in this film is ‘Oh, My Love’ by Riz Ortolani. The scene surrounding it is amazing, and this song… will, as I said just then, haunt you. Truly terrific.

OVERALL = 4.5/5

I cannot highly recommend this film enough. But REMEMBER, this IS a film; not a movie. If you want a fun time with cheesy one-liners and hot girls in leather, grinding on the hero, lots of guns and explosions, car chases and adrenaline, this is not the movie for you. This is a serious film. The parts that make my smile or laugh are not jokes. The violence is not ‘cool.’ It’s gritty, and it’s serious. But, at the same time, seriously enjoyable.

Go see it.

CONTENT WARING
Actual Rating: R
Worthy Rating: R

Appropriately rated R. The violence (though there’s not a ton) is gruesome and brutally bloody. The language has about a dozen usings of the F-word, along with your ‘S–ts,’ ‘Godd–ns,’ and etc. There is a scene with brief nudity, but it’s not exactly sexual. They are strippers, but they are backstage, basically just sitting around, after (or waiting for) a show. During that scene, if your eye is drawn to couple of pairs of bare breasts rather than what is centrally happening during the scene, there is something wrong with you, or you are an adolescent boy that doesn’t have internet access. No sexuality. There is one kiss (an epic one, at that), but no sexuality. Drinking occurs, but it’s nothing to cry over; you see more on Nickelodeon nowadays.

Don’t take your kids, though. This is an R rated movie, and rightfully so.

Lassiter High School, a school in a neighboring county where I live (close to Atlanta, Georgia), has recently had it’s electronic panel sign out front to include adspace for potential businesses and advertisers.
Many people are complaining that a school sign is not a good place to advertise. Something about ‘selling out’ or ‘influencing kids’ or whatever. The fact of the matter is… it’s a GREAT place to advertise!

The fact of the matter is 19,000 cars pass by this sign on the busy road it’s located on every single day. Figuring in how much advertisers pay, it could yield close to $50,000 for the school every year, only by displaying an ad.

Remember back in school when they tried to get you to sell magazine subscriptions to raise money for the school? I still don’t know why it was legal to basically bribe and enslave the kids to make money for the school, but it was really quite stupid – plus it couldn’t have brought in a ton of money, and on top of they, they had to pay for the prizes given to the kids and, in the end, they only get a fraction of the profit anyway.

People that generally have a problem with ads of this sort are usually your typical, run-of-the-mill anti-capitalists that believe simply by existing, they deserve as much money as say, a brain surgeon or someone wealthy like that. Why? Because, apparently, telling kids that GasSouth is a ‘Partner in Education’ is A VILE SIN compared to, oh, say the ways the less-that-great media influences kids and teens on a daily basis, like the idiots on Jersey Shore or the music feature lyrics about sex, drinking, etc. No, putting ads about Chick-fil-a (where I happen to work – excellent, Christian organization) and A Tire Place is just awful. Really.

I say KEEP the ads! Heck, put MORE UP. Think about it; a small section with ads in a school newsletter could yield THOUSANDS of dollars a year. Those televisions that show slideshows of upcoming sports games or club meetings they have in schools? Play ads on those things! That is potentially TENS of THOUSANDS of more dollars that the (nastily failing) Education system here in the United States could be using to, I don’t know, FIX ITSELF! Such is the beauty of Capitalsim. Screw you, Michael Moore! :D

Anyway, Speaking of ads…
